If you're using 3ds max to try to do augmented reality using FlarToolKit  in flash you MAY have run into an error 126 when trying to install feeling softwares 3.05c version of ColladaMax

this error 126 where the DLE file fails to initialize has to do with the directX SDK not being installed. This will happen on the stock 32-bit version AND the modified 64-bit version.

There's not really any documentation that will let you know this, and you'll probably waste a few days trying to figure it. That's what I just did unfortunetly.

Hopefully this will help. download the below 2 files and install them. After that collada export is smooth sailing.

the built in autodesk collada DAE export works OK, but it mostly sucks and gets texture mapping wrong.

People have been taking a lot of photos and videos of my Genpets and flesh shoe while they're here at ARS Electronica. Here are 2 that I like. thanks to the poster of these!

If you watch closely at the beginning you can see the shoe moves...

this person also captured a good shot of one of the genpets breathing.

I'll write a full blog entry when I return, but for now, wow. This truely is one of the biggest festivals in the art world. It's amazing how many people are here and how much art is on display, and I've met so many amazing artists!

To the left is an image of myself and bio artist Eduardo Kac (GFB Bunny alba, genesis, and many other well known works) who is also showing at the festival and was awarded a golden nica this year.

I never post work work on this site. anyways, I do flash and code stuff... here's a recent animation I did for toronto zoo. the illustrations were originally created by an amazing lad named shingo and concept was stephanie yu.

you'll probably need to refresh the page to view the animation.. I need to add a play again button or something... if all you see is the polar bear.. then that's the end. refresh the page.

REMINDER! Genpets and flesh shoe at Ars Electronica 2009 in just 11 days!!!

     (AND ME!) Linz Austria...

I just started following Ars_electronica on twitter and it's gotten me really excited for the festival. Here's a posting from WIRED magazine... http://www.wired.com/beyond_the_beyond/2009/08/ars-electronica-human-nature/

The show is going to be amazing to see, here's another link showcasing just a few of the works that will be there http://blog.ponoko.com/2009/08/22/ars-electronica-festival/

I don't want to downplay the honor of getting to show my work there, but honestly, I'm just bouncing up and down to go see all the other work. It really will be inspiring and I'm curious as to who I'll ultimately meet and talk with.

I was pretty stressed repairing and packing work and dealing with paperwork, but that was all done on Friday when Jochen saved my butt, so now I can actually just focus on going and seeing amazing artwork and projects. WOOO!

I can't wait to go and talk shop with a  slew of artists, scientsists, tinkerers. I won't be able to stop talking for 8 days ;)

if you're unsure of what ARS is... well, it's a rather important festival in the art world, so I can't wait to go see all the amazing work!

    this is the show description

    CNC Machine!!!!
    Categories: Art , Business , Work , Electronics , 3D , Sculpture , News

Yesterday I ordered a CNC Machine. VERY exciting.

For those that don't know what that is, it's a computer controlled xyz (3d) cutting head. So I can design something in the computer, a 3d object such as a car, and the machine will then cut it out of a block of something. Say wood, plastic, plaster, aluminum, etc.

I've wanted one for awhile, and the new work I've wanted to do has pretty much 100% depended on me having one..

    Well, soon I will.

    Which means, new work soon.

Work that should make my previous stuff look like child's play. To say I'm excited would be an understatement.

For the commdore+xbox project I don't want to have to push 5 on/off switches. understandably...

    1. the xbox needs power

    2. the wifi adapter needs power

    3. the speakers need power

    4. the commodore 5" CRT monitor needs power.

I built a small voltage regulator and relay setup that controls the on/off functionality of the wifi, speakers, and commodore monitor. it uses an external 12volt supply 3amps, has a 7806 to generate the 6v supply for the wifi adapter, and it's all controlled by a relay, that is in series hooked into the 5v supply of the xbox hard drive.

so when the xbox turns on it's hard drive, the relay then supplies power from the secondary power source to everything else.

hence, one button turns on everything, instantly. it's beautiful.

For the new Q5 Audi campaign "Don't buy another box" I did the web banners and online material, some 3d paper cars, and I also modeled the box used in all the print material with 3DS Max.

It's not art, but it's still kind of cool to see something I made all over the place...

the Audi Q5 is an SUV size vehicle, but it's deffinetly no box unlike say, a mercedes SUV, which is what we're getting at *cough GLK
